At home in your body
During eight workshops, elderly inhabitants of care home ‘De Boeg’ and pupils in the final two years of Islamic primary school ‘Al Wafa’, jointly created objects that reflect their emotional life. We started off with questions such as: What kind of images do you see if you listen to your body? What do you need to be able to feel comfortable in your own skin? By working with the body as a theme, I created a bridge between two extremes: elderly people, who observe the decreasing abilities of their bodies; and children, who are still in the process of developing their bodies’ possibilities. Through a movingly fragile process, the young and old translate their personal inner experiences into a visual language. Within Islam, it is not allowed to directly portray the body. By ‘listening’ intently to what goes on within, new ways of expression were discovered. Gradually, objects arose in which each personality was reflected.Opdrachtgever: Care home De Boeg, Amsterdam i.c.w. Islamic primary school Al Wafa. Datum: 2008 Fotograaf: Ulrike Bartels
